On a beautifully clear day, I find myself carving my way down the Wienerberger Horn, surrounded by crisp mountain air and fresh snow. The wide-open blue runs offer smooth turns and panoramic views over the aptly named Wildschönau (meaning ‘wild and beautiful’) Valley. This is Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau – an area covering four mountains that blends picturesque beauty with an exhilarating variety of slopes. With its charming wooden chalets, unspoiled landscapes and impeccably groomed slopes, this resort is an under-the-radar haven for discerning travellers seeking both adventure and authenticity.

Those in search of a challenge will find a solid selection of red and black runs that test both skill and stamina, while the region is rightly known for being perfect for beginners and families. Children love the Kids Run, a gentle blue slope dotted with tunnels, turns, bumps, a mini-jump and even a giant hand (complete with sound effects when high-fived).

For those with an eye for design, the resort’s ‘Top of Alpbachtal’ observation tower is worth a stop. The striking 13-meter structure, constructed with 25,000 individual wooden shingles, offers a breathtaking vantage point of the surrounding peaks. The views are nothing short of cinematic, complete with rolling snow-covered summits and endless blue skies.

Beyond skiing, Alpbach offers a range of winter experiences that elevate it from a simple ski destination to a full alpine escape, especially for families. The Lauser Sauser, a thrilling alpine coaster, winds through 1,420 meters of track at speeds up to 42 km/h, delivering an adrenaline rush with every twist and drop. For a more serene experience, winter hiking trails weave through snow-dusted forests, offering moments of solitude and connection with nature.

Après-ski in Alpbach is a refined affair. Rustic mountain huts serve up hearty, traditional fare—think golden, crispy Wiener Schnitzel and indulgent Käsespätzle paired with a glass of crisp Austrian Grüner Veltliner. The village itself, often hailed as the most beautiful in Austria, maintains a timeless charm with its strict architectural regulations ensuring that modern high-rises never disrupt the fairy-tale aesthetic. Evenings are best spent savouring local schnapps by a roaring fire, the perfect way to unwind after a day on the slopes.

While Alpbach may not have the vast expanse of larger Alpine resorts, its 100 kilometres of pistes cater to a well-balanced mix of skiers. The town’s intimate scale adds to its appeal, offering a more exclusive and immersive experience without the crowds of better-known destinations. It’s not quite ski-in ski-out, but the town is well connected to the lifts by frequent and free ski buses. Although the altitude of 2,000m is slightly lower than some of its counterparts, well-maintained snow cannons ensure optimal conditions throughout the season.

Alpbach is more than just a ski destination. Throughout our stay I’m blown away by the authenticity of the town: most of the conversations we overhear are in German, and it’s a fascinating insight into a different way of life. The food is delightfully foreign and delicious, and the schnapps is dangerously good (the nearby Hof farm is available for distillery tours almost all year round).
