Located within a former remittance house hailed as the birthplace of banking in the city, heritage hotel 21 Carpenter has opened in Singapore.
Offering guests a blend of heritage and modernity following an update by architectural firm WOHA, the new boutique hotel 21 Carpenter, which is located between Clarke Quay and Boat Quay and comprises four four-storey shop houses, is an invitation to step into some of Singapore’s most vibrant precincts.
Special attention was given to conserving the original features of the buildings in line with URA conservation guidelines. The facade’s Shanghai plaster dates to the 1930s, and on the building’s exterior, Chinese characters list cities and regions to which the remittances were once sent. Poetic details reference the building’s history, with the Urban Wing’s aluminium art facade featuring excerpts from original remittance letters.
Within, all 48 rooms incorporate old and new elements, including furniture custom designed by WOHA: look out for the 30-sqm Urban Luxe room, where floor-to-ceiling windows offer views of the city and the bay. Unlike many shophouse hotels, every room has a full-sized window, many of which share the same views as the Garden Terrace on level three, the ideal spot for intimate celebrations.
Take one of the hotel’s Linus bicycles for a spin and look out for the soon-to-launch Kee’s, a Neo-Bistro & Bar, a street-level venue headed by Michelin-recognised chef Andrew Walsh that’s set to serve European-inspired bistro fare and comforting food, wines, and cocktails.
