Perched above Vietnam’s East Sea, Intercontinental Da Nang Peninsula Resort offers intimate luxury amidst nature.

On a sunny afternoon in Da Nang, waterfront vistas set the perfect backdrop for a weekend getaway. As I lift my eyes from an endless stretch of blue, I am met by the curious gaze of an unexpected “guest” on the balcony, her inquisitive eyes sparkling with mischief. The mountains of Son Tra, where the Intercontinental Da Nang Peninsula Resort gracefully perches, are home to playful macaques, adding a touch of wild charm to the idyllic resort.

Nestled in a 39-hectare nature reserve, the resort features a cliff-suspended restaurant, Michelin-starred French dining, and a daily schedule of family and wellness activities, including a nature tour to get a glimpse of Red Douc Langurs, macaques, and more than 300 types of flora and fauna.

Experience Luxury through the lens of Bill Bensley

Built by world-acclaimed architect Bill Bensley, the stunning resort evokes a blend of Vietnamese tradition and modernity. Harmonising bold colours with whimsical patterns, Bensley invites visitors to glance up, down and all around the hotel’s surroundings. A nod to the local culture, the interiors are adorned with lanterns, motifs, and lotuses.

The serene hideaway features four levels: Heaven, Sky, Earth, and Sea, with each level connected by the resort’s funicular rail, dubbed the “Nam Tram”. As a popular family destination, I was surprised I had the whole beachfront pool to myself in the morning; the hotel thoughtfully positioned the adults-only pool a walkable distance from the family pool, so you can immerse in tranquillity.

After a peaceful stroll along the beach, ascend to “Heaven” for an authentic Vietnamese breakfast at Citron. A standout feature of the restaurant is definitely its inverted cone booths, inspired by the iconic Vietnamese nón-lá hat, where guests are suspended atop the waterfront with a bird’s-eye view of the glistening cove.

Where Time Stands Still

Intertwined with nature, you will easily find yourself losing track of time in the resort’s lavish villas. Featuring some not-so-humble abodes, a classic room starts at an expansive 70 sqm. We stay in the spacious 80 sqm king club suite, which opens to panoramic ocean vistas from its wrap-around terrace. Soak in the scenery from the comfort of the grand marble tub, where you can get lost in the horizon. Alternatively, families might like to treat themselves to the new 4-bedroom ocean-view pool villa, featuring a waterfront infinity pool overlooking the secluded cove.

Getting Up Close with Red Douc Langurs

Getting a close encounter with Red Douc Langurs is always as unexpected as it is exciting. These white-tailed monkeys have distinct, cartoonish faces with red patches around the eyes. “Doucs usually roam around treetops, they are shy and rarely approach people.” explains naturalist Quan, who passionately describes his favourite primate during his morning Nature Tour.

“We hope to create a safe haven by building monkey bridges that encourage them to roam around and to mate naturally. It is imminent that we work with NGOs to protect such beautiful species.”
