Singapore’s Parkroyal Collection Marina Bay is an indulgent taste of the future of city hotels.

Following a US$33.6 million nine-month overhaul, Pan Pacific Group’s Parkroyal Collection Marina Bay offers travellers a different accommodation experience, one where wellness, sustainability and innovation define the future of hotels.

Guests will not only be wowed by the stunning 21-storey John Portman-designed skylit atrium – Southeast Asia’s largest – but how the space has been transformed into an urban oasis, complete with a 13-metre tall green wall and the delightful sound of songbirds, which are brought into the hotel each morning by specialist keepers. Soaring high above is Orchidea, the iconic suspended floral sculpture by American wire artist Richard Lippold.

The hotel is home to more than 2,400 plants, trees, and shrubs, many of which can be found in the hotel’s Urban Farm, which boasts more than 60 varieties of fruit, vegetables and herbs and forms the backbone of the farm-to-table concept of the restaurants, bars and spa.

The hotel’s impressive green credentials, which include 210 rooftop solar panels, extend to its sublime guest rooms and suites, including my Urban Deluxe Room with its sprawling views across Marina Bay (best enjoyed from the balcony). The room is modern, minimalist and elegant, with plenty of hidden storage spaces, a broad workspace, a large flat screen television, and a spacious bathroom with Appelles bath amenities and a filtered drinking water tap that reduced the need for plastic bottles.

For those looking to splurge a little, opt for the Signature Marina Bay Suite, which boasts a separate living room, a bathroom with separate bathtub, and access to the Collection Club, an exclusive space located adjacent to the hotel’s 25-metre mineral pool that offers a specially curated menu of breakfast, afternoon tea and evening canapés.

As with any grand urban hotel, there is a great selection of dining options at Parkroyal Collection Marina Bay, including Peach Blossoms, a progressive Chinese restaurant where classic dishes are given a modern twist; Peppermint, an all-day dining option where the hotel’s farm-to-table philosophy is showcased; and Sushi Jiro, an elegant Japanese eatery that serves jet-fresh seafood.

Be sure to leave time for a tipple in the Portman Bar, named for the hotel’s original architect and where many ingredients are sourced from the Urban Garden.

In addition to its modern fitness centre and energetic Spin Bike Studio, the hotel is home to the St. Gregory spa, where signature treatments – many laced with ingredients from the Urban Garden – include the Pro-collagen Age Defy ritual, the Dynamic Resurfacing Precision Peel, and the Elemis Well-Being Massage. Those looking to commune with nature further can even combine a tour of the garden with a wellness set lunch and a singing bowl experience.
