There’s a raft of high-profile openings in London this summer but Raffles London at the OWO, or Old War Office, is arguably the most hotly anticipated.
The grand Baroque building, last in use by the Ministry of Defence in the 1960s, has made a star turn in each of Daniel Craig’s 007 films, and will open its doors to the public for the first time ever this summer in its new glossy guise.
Located in the heart of Whitehall, this grand Grade II listed Edwardian building once served as the offices for many well-known historical figures including Sir Winston Churchill, Lord Haldane, Earl Kitchener and John Profumo and was Ian Fleming’s inspiration for James Bond.
The new hotel will boast 120 rooms including 39 suites – many with views over Whitehall and St. James’s Park – that include large marble bathrooms with separate showers and specially commissioned bathroom amenities in addition to curated artwork.
The most coveted rooms will be the five Heritage Suites, which are situated in the former offices of the aforementioned political and military leaders, while other sought-after suites are tucked away in the building’s majestic turrets.
Even if you’re not staying at the hotel, it’s worth popping in for dinner and cocktails as the new property features nine restaurants and three bars, including three dining venues by three Michelin-starred chef Mauro Colagreco. The most coveted seats will be at Mauro’s Table, a private dining room with guest access to an exceptional show kitchen. Guests can also pull up a chair at The Guards Bar, a sumptuous wood-panelled cocktail and champagne bar overlooking Horse Guards. Those seeking something more clandestine can check into The Spy Bar, a speakeasy housed in rooms once used by secret intelligence bureau MI5.
In two firsts for the UK capital, OWO is home to a Guerlain spa and active wellness spaces by Pillar Wellbeing, with facilities including nine treatment suites, a 20-metre indoor swimming pool, vitality pool, sauna and steam rooms, gym and movement studio.
