Adaaran Select Meedhupparu: The Maldives’ Best-Kept Secret in the Raa Atoll

When we think of the Maldives, our minds tend to fill with images of pristine beaches, swaying palms, and utterly luxurious, uber-romantic retreats cast far from the modern world. And yes, for some of the archipelago’s 180-odd islands, that’s an apt description.

However, not all Maldives resorts are dedicated to deep-pocketed honeymooners secreting themselves away on once-in-a-lifetime adventures; some, including one of the Raa Atoll’s best kept secrets, Adaaran Select Meedhupparu, welcome regular guests – both couples and families – like long-time friends when they arrive each season, while also offering a host of activities, a plethora of dining options and surprisingly good value amidst rustic, tropical elegance.

Located on Meedhupparu Island, a short seaplane hop north of the capital city of Malé, Adaaran Select Meedhupparu is a laid-back and welcoming paradise, fringed by powdery white sands and encircled by a thriving house reef. Part of Sri Lanka’s Aitken Spence hotel group, this Indian Ocean retreat is a place where time blissfully slows down, allowing families to immerse themselves in the raw beauty of nature while reconnecting in a way the busy world rarely allows.

And while the resort doesn’t shy away from creature comforts (you’re on holiday after all), its Adaaran Prestige Water Villas – designed as a luxurious resort-within-a-resort perched over the lagoon – mean that at Adaaran Select Meedhupparu there’s always a seductive spot for every traveller, from honeymooners seeking seclusion to families craving adventure.

I recently visited the resort, and in this review, I outline what’s in store for travellers to this humble little isle, what dining, wellness and adventure experiences are on offer, and how I think it compares to other properties across the Maldives.

Seaplane vs Speedboat: Logistics, Views and On-Island Vibe

Trans Maldivian Airways seaplane

From the air, Adaaran Select Meedhupparu (see on Trip / TripAdvisor / Klook) looks much like the other Maldives resorts, with its verdant jungle centre, white sandy beaches and chain of pearl-like overwater villas.

However, once you arrive, you quickly realise that the pace is slower and the vibe is more casual, which is why it appeals so much to families from around the world.

Flight + Seaplane Breakdown: Timing, Lounge Access & Luggage Rules

Like many resorts in the Maldives, Adaaran Select Meedhupparu is most easily reached via a 45-minute seaplane flight from Velana International Airport in Malé, the main gateway to the Indian Ocean nation. As the seaplanes of the Maldives don’t operate after dark, it’s important to time your arriving flight so that you can make a seamless connection onto your seaplane and enjoy every moment you can on your new island hideaway.

New arrivals are met at international arrivals and, after a quick baggage check-in at the counters of one of the seaplane companies, are quickly escorted around the runway to the bustling new seaplane terminal. Here, travellers will have access to a luxurious, dedicated departure lounge, where high-speed wifi, a hot and cold buffet, and complimentary massages help travellers get into the Indian Ocean vibe before they fly.

From Malé, the exhilarating journey to Adaaran Select Meedhupparu offers breathtaking aerial views as countless atolls, resembling scattered emeralds in a vast blue sea, slip past far below. Before you know it, you’re gliding down to the lagoon for landing, a band of singing hotel staff waiting on the jetty to serve you a welcome drink and whisk you off to your accommodation. It’s a well-oiled operation – all you have to do is sit back and soak in the tropical ambience.

If you’re not really a fan of seaplanes (and some are not) or if you’re packing for an extended stay (as the seaplane has tight luggage restrictions), then the alternative option is a 20-minute domestic flight (in a much larger aircraft) to Ifuru Airport, the nearest island landing strip to the resort, followed by a 45-minute speedboat ride – keep an eye out for the atoll’s resident dolphin pods. While this option might be a little less adventurous, it’s no less seamless, and you’ll quickly be in island mode.

Age & Maintenance Level: A Look at a 2000s Property in 2026

Like most of the islands in the Maldives, Meedhupparu Island measures just 800 meters long and 200 meters wide (about the size of four city blocks), which ensures it remains intimate yet spacious enough for travellers to escape and explore. The island is criss-crossed with sandy paths (look out for the golf buggies filled with happy new arrivals) lined with hibiscus blooms, frangipani trees, and coconut palms.

At every turn, you’ll discover another impeccable soft sand beach that invites barefoot strolls at sunrise or sunset, and beyond, the resort’s house reef, which is easily accessible from the shore, is a snorkeler’s dream, alive with colourful fish, intricate coral formations and graceful turtles. From the beach, you’ll be able to spy other island resorts on the horizon, but they’re little more than green bumps on the endless sea – remember, serenity comes with seclusion.

My first impressions of Adaaran Select Meedhupparu, which opened in 2000, were of a resort that, while a little weathered, was welcoming, well-established and well-maintained, more like a family summer home than a glitzy Instagram backdrop.

Beaches, pathways and gardens were pristinely groomed, tropical vegetation wreathed every villa and coastline, allowing the resort to dissolve into its natural environment, and staff, resplendent in brilliant white uniforms, were always quick to smile. The sound of children’s laughter lingered on the warm morning air and the gentle lapping of waves, and the call of soaring terns was an omnipresent soundtrack.

Accommodation Breakdown: Standard vs Adults-Only Overwater Options

Adaaran Prestige aerial

While Adaaran Select Meedhupparu has its standard, family-friendly beachfront villas, it also has a clutch of indulgent adults-only retreats, the Adaaran Prestige Water Villas (where I stayed), ensuring the island appeals to travellers of all persuasions.

What You Get in Every Beach Villa (and Where They Differ Most)

Adaaran Prestige rooms

Let’s start with the resort’s standard accommodations, shall we? Adaaran Select Meedhupparu’s bungalow-styled beach villas offer travellers a harmonious blend of Maldivian charm and homely elegance, emphasising space, comfort and direct access to the island’s stunning beaches.

There is a selection of options available, ranging from Beach Villas and Deluxe Beach Villas to two-bedroom versions and even villas with private jacuzzis, perfect for couples looking for those sunset moments. There is also the Meedhupparu Residence, a two-storey villa, catering to just two guests, with a private plunge pool, a spacious living room that flows onto sun-kissed decks, and a sumptuous bathroom; and the 102 sqm Honeymoon Suite, with its private courtyard, jacuzzi, and jungle surrounds.

All villas offer direct beach access and partial or full views of the lagoon, private wooden decks with sun loungers and outdoor showers, perfect for rinsing off after a dip in the sea. Interiors are light and airy, with warm, wooden accents, thatched roofs, minibars, bathtubs (in selected rooms), king-size beds and large windows that flood the space with natural light, and many villas can be interconnected for family use.

All of the resort’s beach villas feature plenty of storage space, sizable bathrooms, air-conditioning and Wi-Fi access, and in-room dining as part of the resort’s all-inclusive package (more on that in a minute). The main difference between the many styles is the location on the island, the overall size, and the proximity to the beach, which is never far away.

Prestige Water Villas: 20 Units, Butler Service & Exclusive Facilities

Adaaran Prestige beachfront

And then there’s the Adaaran Prestige Water Villas, that private enclave I mentioned earlier, which functions as a resort-within-a-resort, with just 20 exclusive 84 sqm overwater bungalows perched above the lagoon, and a dedicated reception, army of butlers, swimming pool, private beach and elegant bar and restaurant.

My villa, located at the centre of the semi-circle chain of overwater bungalows, featured a king-sized bed facing floor-to-ceiling French doors that opened onto a sun deck with a jacuzzi, a glass panelled floor, and direct lagoon access. The villas are a symphony of gleaming honey-hued wood with distinct Maldivian accents, a comfortable lounge area (perfect for in-villa dining), a writing desk, a large bathroom with rainshower and twin vanities, and a fully stocked mini-bar replenished daily.

While they’re not as luxurious as some resorts in the Maldives, these villas are more than comfortable, and offer great privacy, a sense of place and amenities, both in rooms and beyond.

What sets the Prestige Water Villas apart is their array of exclusive amenities. Like most villa bookings on the island, guests in these water villas enjoy the resort’s 24-hour Premium All-Inclusive package, as well as priority check-in at a dedicated lounge, where chilled towels and welcome cocktails await, and access to a private infinity pool and beach facilities, and a dedicated butler who is always just a Whatsapp message away and who can organise everything from buggy transfers and floating breakfasts to destination dining occasions and spa bookings.

Of course, in addition to the added privacy and serenity (did I mention it’s adults only?), the true allure of these villas is the seamless integration with the marine environment. Guests wake to the gentle lap of waves beneath the villa and can start the morning with coffee and views of an uninterrupted horizon, or spend their evenings stargazing from the jacuzzi, far from any light pollution.

All-Inclusive Food & Drink Coverage: What’s Actually Included

Adaaran Prestige dining

With Adaaran Select Meedhupparu’s all-inclusive packages, guests can make the most of the island’s generous selection of restaurants and bars, which range from specialty dining to beachfront tiki bars with cocktail lists longer than your arm.

Thavaa, Sufura & Water Villa Restaurant: Cuisine Styles & Signature Dishes

There really is something for every traveller at Adaaran Select Meedhupparu, a resort that prides itself on culinary excellence.

The main restaurant, Jaafaiy, is home to lingering (and very busy) breakfasts, with extensive international buffet selections complemented by live cooking stations – think fresh tropical fruit smoothies, made-to-order omelettes, and local favourites like mas huni (shredded tuna with coconut) – as well as casual lunch and dinner selections that feature both international and Maldivian specialties, with rotating themed nights, including Italian, Southeast Asian, German BBQ, and Seafood Spectacular, ensuring no meal feels repetitive.

Nearby, Sufura, the resort’s specialty Indian restaurant, is another popular dining option, one which captures the essence of regional Indian cuisine thanks to a dedicated culinary team. During my stay, the restaurant put on a fantastic Diwali spread, complete with dancing and floral garlands on arrival.

For something a little more refined, head to the a la carte Thavaa Restaurant (have your butler make you a reservation as spaces fill up quickly), which serves fresh, authentic Mediterranean cuisine (the fresh Maldivian tuna steaks are to die for) steps from the water’s edge. Adjacent to Thavaa, Café Mass serves round-the-clock comfort food, from sandwiches and burgers to pizza, making it a popular spot for families looking for a quick, casual bite.

As I mentioned earlier, guests of the Adaaran Prestige Water Villas also have access to their own dedicated restaurant, the elegant Water Villa Restaurant & Lounge, which serves a la carte international cuisine perched over the lagoon, steps from the water villas. I found the staff to be nothing if not accommodating – I hinted that I loved Maldivian bajiya, a popular, triangular-shaped snack of spicy smoked, dried tuna and fiery Maldivian chillis, and the next afternoon they were presented in all their smoky, spicy glory. The restaurant has a broad deck for alfresco dining, and next door is an elegant lounge with floor-to-ceiling windows and polished wood floors that serves a mean martini.

Premium All-Inclusive Drinks: What’s Covered & Where to Splurge

Talking of martinis, this might come as a surprise to some, but the resort also has an impressive lineup of cocktail bars, scattered across its idyllic beaches. On my first two days at the resort, a monsoon squall meant our activity options were limited, and instead my wife and I went on a little bar crawl via our butler’s golf buggy.

The resort’s Halaboli Bar is the heart of the action. Under vaulted ceilings and spinning fans, this great venue features a team of diligent mixologists (try their spicy margaritas), live music in the evenings, pool and table tennis tables, and a selection of great beach novels. If you’re looking to beat the heat, the bar also offers 12 varieties of homemade ice cream.

Only steps away is the resort’s popular Pool Bar, a classic swim-up venue that specialises in frozen cocktails and mocktails that can be enjoyed without having to leave the main infinity pool. A short stroll across the sand leads to the Sunset Bar, a very popular spot at dusk when guests converge on its alfresco tables to farewell another day in paradise and to greet the last seaplane arrivals over Cosmopolitans and Pina Coladas

If you don’t find the drink you’re looking for at these first three outposts, you will at Albino Bar, located across the island on a tiny little beach. Here, guests are greeted by a towering chalkboard menu with 101 – count them – cocktails (many laced with local arak spirit), the most of any bar in the Maldives. It’s a joy to visit each evening to try something new (try the Meedhupparu Sunset, a blend of rum, pineapple, and coconut with a fiery twist) as the warm breeze sways the coconut palms overhead.

Of course, there are options to splurge a little, especially when it comes to selections from the resort’s extensive wine collection, as well as a raft of indulgent destination dining options, from romantic dinners on a remote sun deck to family barbeques.

Included Activities: Snorkelling, Excursions & Wellness Breakdown

boating in Maldives

Beyond dining and relaxing in your villa, activities are abundant – from snorkelling and diving to beach volleyball and wellness – on offer at Adaaran Select Meedhupparu, many of which are included in the all-inclusive package.

Excursions List: Dolphin Trips, Sandbank Picnics, & Manta Swims

Of course, one of the main appeals of the Maldives is slipping into the warm waters of an Indian Ocean lagoon in search of tropical fish, turtles, sting rays and verdant coral reefs, and Adaaran Select Meedhupparu has you covered. Meedhupparu’s house reef is a jewel in the Raa Atoll and welcomes both beginner and seasoned snorkellers and divers. With gentle slopes, it’s a great spot for those looking to try diving for the first time or to be certified.

However, snorkellers can also follow a series of guided routes (one of the best is on the island’s southern side, near the dive centre) along the reef that ensures guests can make the most of this unique aquatic world. For the more adventurous, the nearby Nagili Thila offers spectacular corals but also the chance to pilot one of the resort’s underwater scooters. Snorkelling equipment is complimentary, so there’s no excuse not to jump in and explore the reef. The adventurous can even try freediving, a popular sport in the Maldives.

Divers here in the Raa Atoll, one of the Maldives’ most northernmost atolls (and therefore less visited), are also spoiled for choice further afield, with a host of exciting dive spots offering access to manta rays, sting rays, mesmerising corals and sleek reef sharks.

Some of the top spots that the dive instructors at the PADI-certified dive centre can guide guests to include Labirinth, a medium-sized thila (an underwater pinnacle) that collapsed, leaving a canyon through which large fish, including batfish, Napoleon wrasse and groupers, often travel; Vandhoo Kanuoli, known locally as The Wall, which is popular with eagle rays, wrasses and even tuna; and Kottefaru Kammati, a drop-off reef popular with schools of snapper, bannerfish and, during summer, manta rays.

Water sports are also the star at the resort, with complimentary non-motorised options like kayaking, paddleboarding, Hobie Cat Sailing and windsurfing available at the dedicated water sports centre, while motorised adventures such as jet skiing or parasailing do come with an additional cost.

In addition, land-based activities include tennis, badminton, and exciting beach volleyball tournaments, as well as fascinating Maldivian cooking classes and even boduberu drum workshops, which are always popular with younger travellers.

There is also a wide range of excursions on offer, including dolphin safaris and the chance to swim with manta rays, sunrise and sunset handline fishing trips aboard a traditional Dhoni in search of red snapper and barracuda (as well as options to cook what you catch), sandbank picnics, which are always popular with families, sunset cruises for those precious photo ops, and private barbeques on uninhabited islands, a great choice for couples. You can also visit the local island of Meedhoo to meet Maldivian communities and learn more about their rich culture.

For travellers looking for a little tranquillity, wellness takes centre stage at the comprehensive Chavana Spa, a Balinese-inspired oasis set amid lush gardens at the heart of the resort. Here, treatments draw from Ayurvedic principles, with signature massages using warm oils and rhythmic strokes to melt away stress. There is also a range of Thai massages, facials and wraps, a resident Chinese reflexology specialist, a sauna and steam room, a fully equipped gym, and regular yoga sessions.

Best Months to Visit Adaaran Select Meedhupparu

Things start slow on Adaaran Select Meedhupparu (unless you opt for those morning yoga sessions), with leisurely mealtimes, activities throughout the day, and regular events and themed nights to shake things up (although don’t expect much in the way of nightlife, as most families retire early). The resort is particularly popular with European guests from France, Italy and Germany, although an increasing number of travellers from Asia (especially Korea and China) are discovering the resort for themselves.

The best time to visit the Maldives is during the dry season, from November to April, when the weather is a little more reliable, with plenty of sunshine and calm seas. However, the shoulder period of November to early May is also a great option, with fewer crowds and still great weather.

Most guests stay on the island for a week (the Maldives takes a little effort to get to, so most make the most of their vacation time), with the all-inclusive packages catering to seven-day stays that allow enough time for guests to completely unwind and enjoy all the island has to offer.

These packages include a range of complimentary excursions, including sunset cruises and guided snorkelling tours, complimentary access to non-motorised water sports, spa credit, and open dining at the resort’s outlets, complete with premium wines, spirits, and cocktails from an extensive selection.

Bottom Line: Takeaways for Families, Couples & First-Timers

Adaaran Prestige sailboat

The things I loved most about Adaaran Select Meedhupparu were the laid-back, welcoming ambience of the resort, which really made us feel calm and relaxed, as well as the great selection of bars, which made every sunset an adventure, and the perks of the water villas, as well as the attentive service of our butler, the remarkable Adam.

Practical Drawbacks: Over-Subscribed Free Trips & Limited Adult-Only Space

The resort, while well-maintained, does look its age compared to the many newer resorts in the Maldives, but for some guests, that’s part of its charm.

I found the free excursions to be overly subscribed, leading to packed vessels and few chances to really encounter marine life – perhaps better to opt for a private excursion.

As a couple without kids, we found ourselves hiding out in the water villa area most of the time, as school holidays in Europe meant the resort was filled with families.

Realistic Verdict: Great All-Inclusive Value with Some Trade-Offs

A great first foray into the Maldives for Indian Ocean newbies, or a fantastic option for families looking to relax and soak up sea and sun together without worrying about the bill at the end of the vacation, Adaaran Select Meedhupparu is a casual yet elegant and comprehensive Maldives option that I think multi-generation travellers will love.
