When we think of the Maldives, that idyllic, sun-kissed archipelago at the heart of the Indian Ocean, we tend to think of couples strolling, hand-in-hand, along white sandy beaches or lounging, cocktail in hand, as the sun sets on another glorious day.
And yes, the Maldives, one of my all-time favourite places, can be a ridiculously romantic destination for the amour inclined. However, it’s also evolved into one of the most compelling family travel destinations in the region, with luxury resorts recognising that mums and dads love to explore its vibrant oceans and palm-encrusted atolls with the little ones in tow.
Today, the best family-friendly resorts in the Maldives feature comprehensive kids’ clubs, family-friendly accommodation options, and a host of activities on and off the water that everyone will love. Here, we offer some of our favourite family-friendly Maldives resorts; properties that have made a genuine effort to appeal to younger as well as older travellers and explain why you need to be booking ahead for the next school holidays now.

NH Collection Maldives Reethi Resort – Best For First-Time Families & Value-Luxury

Why We Chose NH Collection Maldives Reethi Resort
1. Newly renovated villas, refreshed dining + leisure spaces
2. Great family villa layouts with private pools + space for 6
3. Fast seaplane transfer + easy access to Baa Atoll wildlife
The newly reopened NH Collection Maldives Reethi Resort promises plenty of family fun under the sun in one of the Maldives’ most prized atolls. The property, formerly known as Reethi Beach Resort, is a quick 35-minute seaplane (the kids will love these Maldives seaplanes and their barefoot pilots!) from the international airport at Malé and recently emerged from a six-month renovation that has transformed its villas, dining outlets and leisure facilities just in time for winter escapes.
This idyllic retreat, located in the UNESCO-listed Baa Atoll, features just 105 beach and overwater villas, each thoughtfully crafted to blend traditional Maldivian charm and modern comfort. The best options for families include the 115 sqm Two-Bedroom Family Villa with Pool, which accommodates up to six adults and features a sundeck with beachfront pool; and the 150 sqm Two-Bedroom Reethi Suite with Pool, which boasts a private plunge pool and expensive living spaces.
Taking to the water, families can visit the whale sharks, turtles and manta rays of iconic Hanifaru Bay, embark on snorkelling adventures on the island’s house reef in search of clown fish, angel fish and even eagle rays, or go island hopping with stops for a picnic on an uninhabited island. There’s also a host of water sports on offer, ranging from jet skiing, wakeboarding, and flyboarding to kayaking, windsurfing, hydrobiking, and stand-up paddleboarding.
On land, families can team up on the tennis, badminton, volleyball and pickleball courts, stay competitive in the games room, or cool off in the new beachfront infinity pool, while the little ones will love the dedicated kids club, catering to children from 4-12 with a shaded splash pool, arts and crafts and supervised activities, leaving time for parents to pamper themselves at the reimagined REVIVE spa, home to contemporary holistic wellness treatments inspired by nature.
Heritance Aarah – Best For All-Inclusive Family Convenience

Why We Chose Heritance Aarah
1. True all-inclusive simplicity — perfect cost clarity for families
2. Two-Bedroom Family Pool Villas with interconnecting spaces
3. Big activity spread: cinema nights, marine learning, racket sports
One of the Maldives’ newest family-friendly resorts, all-inclusive Heritance Aarah is nestled in the serene Raa Atoll, an easy 40-minute seaplane ride from Malé International Airport (where you’ll even have luxury lounge access while you wait for your seaplane departure), making it a compelling offer for families looking to escape to paradise without having to venture too far.
This magical island is perfectly geared for families. Of the resort’s 124 villas and 26 suites, which line the beach or linger out across the lagoon (some sections of which are adults only), I’d suggest opting for one of the Two Bedroom Family Pool Beach Villas, which sleep up to six with interconnecting spaces, private plunge pools, direct beach access, and sunset-facing decks, making them perfect for multi-generational groups seeking privacy and convenience.
However, families don’t venture to the Maldives to stay in their rooms (only couples do that!). Beyond, you’ll discover a host of facilities and activities on offer, from pickleball, volleyball, badminton and tennis courts, and fun Cinema Paradiso nights on the beach, to a modern kids’ club, home to hands-on marine discovery and cultural workshops, as well as a main infinity pool, and even foosball, billiards and table tennis for the older kids.
Heritance Aarah, one of my favourite Raa Atoll retreats, is also wreathed by a vibrant house reef that’s teeming with corals, tropical fish and turtles, ensuring there’s plenty to do in the water, from kayaking and snorkelling, to stand-up paddleboarding, fishing like a local, watching resident dolphin pods in action, and swimming with manta rays, eagle rays and reef sharks. Kids and parents alike might even want to try their hands at jet ski tours, windsurfing, catamaran sailing and introduction dives conducted by the certified PADI dive centre.
Afterwards, when you have a bunch of hungry souls to feed, everyone will find satisfaction at Heritance Aarah’s array of dining outlets, which include family-friendly beachfront buffet restaurant Ranba, rustic seafood grill Ginifati’s, and the popular poolside Pizza Shack.
Velaa Private Island – Best For Ultra-Luxury Multi-Gen Escapes

Why We Chose Velaa Private Island
1. Home to the largest kids’ water park in the Maldives
2. Multi-bedroom residences designed for multi-gen luxury
3. Troon short-game golf academy + high-level teen activities
Also located to the north of Malé, this time in the remarkable Noonu Atoll, indulgent Velaa Private Island, the brainchild of founders Radka and Jiri Smejc, is a 30-minute seaplane hop from the international airport and emphasises eco-luxury on a private island fringed by turquoise shallows and colourful reefs.
With architecture by Czech designer Petr Kolar, Velaa’s 43 private villas and five four-bedroom residences fuse local materials with contemporary touches, including spacious private pools. Perfectly suited to families, Velaa’s residences are spacious, contemporary and packed with features. The 1,350 sqm Velaa Private Residence features four bedrooms (two with indoor and outdoor bathrooms connected by a garden atrium), two terraces, a fully equipped kitchen, a large dining table, an infinity pool, a living area, a gym and spa room, and a pair of gazebos – complete with pool table, outdoor cinema, and wine bar – on a private stretch of beach.
Meanwhile, the Nika Residence by Patricia Urquiola, which accommodates 10 guests, is an intimate beach retreat featuring four bedrooms, an impressive five-metre-long dining table at the centre of a vaulted dining area, a kitchen, spa and gym, and direct beach access. Unique touches include custom carpets and furnishings, a whole-house surround sound entertainment system, and an expansive terrace with pool and Jacuzzi.
There’s also the Beach Pool House, which features two large bedrooms, indoor and outdoor bathrooms, an infinity pool, and an expansive living room; and the Ocean Pool House, with its two bedrooms benefiting from direct ocean views, a dining area opening onto a broad terrace, and a private pool and hot tub.
Beyond, families will have access to the Lha Velaa Kids Club, open to children 4-12, which features the most extensive kids’ water park in the Maldives (inspired by the founder’s own daughter), while teens can join in marine biology workshops, treasure hunts, gaming console tournaments, and VR adventures.
To make the most of Velaa’s stunning marine environment, which includes a vibrant house reef that’s home to turtles, rays, and reef sharks, and which is part of an ongoing coral restoration project, guests have access to guided snorkelling adventures, a fully equipped dive operation, and water sports like Seabob scooters, sailing catamarans, windsurfing, flyboarding, hoverboarding, electric foil boards and even a tandem Jetovator.
There’s also the Maldives’ only Troon Short Game Golf Academy, designed by Masters champ José María Olazábal, tennis clinics, a climbing wall, a modern fitness centre, a football pitch, and squash and padel courts, while a host of activities include family picnics on uninhabited island cays, island hopping, jet ski safaris, fishing trips, dolphin cruises and beach yoga.
Families will also dine well with a host of dining experiences on offer, including wellness cuisine at Faiy, international fare at Athiri, and Japanese teppanyaki at Tavaru (where the secret cellar houses one of the most exclusive wine collections in the islands).
Adaaran Select Meedhupparu Premium All-Inclusive – Best For Laid-Back Family Beach Holidays

Why We Chose Adaaran Select Meedhupparu Premium All-Inclusive
1. Laid-back barefoot luxury at strong family value
2. Kids club programming + teen water sports + splash pool
3. Excellent house reef with turtles, eagle rays + snorkel safaris
Also located an easy 40-minute seaplane flight from the pint-sized capital (as it’s also part of Aitken Spence Hotels, the whole gang gets access to that seaplane terminal lounge) or a 20-minute domestic flight to Ifuru Airport, followed by a 45-minute speedboat ride (an option for those with more luggage than most!), Adaaran Select Meedhupparu Premium All-Inclusive offers great accommodation and dining packages that will appeal to families.
Another Raa Atoll wonder, Adaaran Select Meedhupparu, which relaunched as an all-inclusive getaway a few years back, blends lush greenery and those iconic Maldivian powdery beaches with a more laid-back and rustic ambience that has proven popular with generations of family travellers. Located on a slender, coral-fringed island surrounded by turquoise lagoons, the resort is one of those hideaways that families visit year after year to embrace its barefoot luxury vibe and its philosophy of “Live Easy, Laugh Often”.
Featuring 220 semi-detached beach and water villas (making it one of the larger resorts in the Maldives), each blending nostalgic Maldivian charm and modern comforts like fully stocked minibars, complimentary snorkelling equipment and spacious bathrooms, the resort has a series of rooms that will appeal to travellers with kids. These include the 102 sqm Two-Bedroom Family Beach Villas, which feature beach decks and interconnecting rooms; the 102 sqm Two-Bedroom Deluxe Family Beach Villas, an upgraded version of the former; and the 158 sqm Meedhupparu Residence with Pool, which has room for the whole tribe. Family villas are also shaded by trees and feature safe play areas steps from the beach.
Beyond the accommodation, there’s plenty to keep families entertained. Tailored for family joy, the resort’s dedicated kids club, catering to little travellers aged 4-12, runs daily programmes in a shaded, air-conditioned space. These include art and craft workshops, nature scavenger hunts, marine biology sessions, turtle tracking adventures, and supervised play in the splash pool, allowing mums and dads some downtime (perhaps to spend in the spa, home to Chinese reflexology, Thai massages, and Ayurvedic treatments in open-air pavilions.
Teens from 12 and up also have access to a gaming lounge, supervised water sports challenges, and dedicated hangouts like beach volleyball or karaoke.
While the resort’s house reef – a star attraction of Adaaran Select Meedhupparu, thanks to its schools of parrotfish and butterfly fish as well as its turtles and eagle rays – is always just a short swim away, complimentary non-motorised sports like kayaking, windsurfing, stand-up paddleboarding, and canoeing are always a great opportunity for families looking to bond. A host of additional activities are organised by the dive centre (many are included in packages), including guided snorkel safaris in search of manta rays, morning dolphin cruises, island-hopping picnics, evening movie nights, sunset fishing trips and even Bubblemaker intros and guided scuba diving.
In addition, there’s pickleball on the beach, tennis, badminton, and volleyball courts, a fun giant chess table, pool and table tennis, eco-walks through lush vegetation, and a large infinity pool with a swim-up bar for when parents need a little break.
Talking of dining, there’s something for every palate, from the buffets of Jaafaiy Restaurant and the casual dining of Café Mas to the authentic Indian dishes of Sufura.
Niyama Private Islands – High-Energy Families Who Want Play and Peace

Why We Chose Niyama Private Islands
1. Two-island concept: Play for kids, Chill for parents
2. Pavilions with private pools, bikes + space for up to 20+
3. Surf break + night snorkelling + underwater dining adventures
Another of my own favourite Maldivian destinations is Niyama Private Islands, an indulgent resort that spans two islands – one dubbed “Play” and the other “Chill” – in the remote Dhaalu Atoll, a 45-minute seaplane ride (complete with lounge access in Malé) from the international airport, or a 35-minute domestic flight to Dhaalu Airport followed by a short speedboat ride for those evening arrivals in the Maldives.
Offering families the perfect blend of high-energy adventure and serene relaxation, Niyama is wreathed by pristine white-sand beaches and turquoise lagoons that are populated by turtles and bottlenose and spinner dolphins. It’s also known for its edgy, modern, award-winning Maldivian design, its barefoot luxury mantra, and its unique experiences, which range from underwater dining to the world’s first submerged nightclub.
Niyama Private Islands features 134 spacious villas and pavilions (villas are divided between beachfront on Play and overwater on Chill, with options for 1–3 bedrooms), that blend contemporary Maldivian aesthetics with high-tech amenities like Bose surround sound, 40-inch flat-screen TVs, Nespresso machines, stocked mini-bars, and outdoor rain showers or soaking tubs.
For families headed to paradise, I’d suggest one of the resort’s Pavilions, which feature plenty of space and close proximity to the island’s natural beauty. There’s the 515 sqm Two-Bedroom Ocean Pool Pavilion, which caters to families of up to eight with ensuite bedrooms, a sunken living room, and a private pool that runs the length of the villa, complete with a Jacuzzi; the 635 sqm Two-Bedroom Beach Pool Pavilion, which boasts direct beach access, a full-sized pool, a dining room and glorious sun decks; and the 770 sqm Three-Bedroom Beach Pool Pavilion, which caters to up to nine guests and features two private pools, a Dhoni-shaped swing and a surround sound entertainment system. All include complimentary bicycles, butler service, homemade ice cream, and 24-hour Dine In room service.
However, for the ultimate family escape, opt for The Crescent, a 1,045 sqm retreat that caters to 14 adults and eight kids. This overwater pavilion features a central two-bedroom ocean pool villa flanked on each side by a deluxe overwater pool villa and a one-bedroom ocean pool pavilion, creating a private village perched over the lagoon. The result is three living rooms, five swimming pools, five Jacuzzis and access to a host of additional perks, from dedicated Thakurus butlers to private beach BBQs and movie nights.
If they can drag the kids out of the pavilion pool, mums and dads will be able to offer a wide range of activities, both on and off the water. There’s a brilliant house reef best discovered on guided snorkelling excursions (look out for the guided glow-in-the-dark night snorkelling sessions), year-round surfing on a private break, dolphin safaris, catamaran sailing, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, parasailing, yacht cruises, and a fully certified dive centre.
On land, there’s water volleyball and water polo in the two main pools, tennis and badminton courts, beach volleyball, a fitness centre, a climbing wall, and even photography and cooking classes. The Explorers Kids Club, catering to little travellers aged 1-12, features a splash park, creative workshops, child-friendly menus and remote-control boat races, while teens will love the pool and foosball tables, table tennis and gaming consoles, and mum and dad can head for the Drift Spa for massages and facials.
Families can even explore the islands by bicycle, hit the basketball court, watch classic movies at sunset, or stargaze at the overwater observatory.
Dining is equally as varied, and kids will love Nest, a restaurant hidden away in the jungle canopy, and Subsix, an underwater restaurant perched above the house reef. There are also the Afro-Latin flavours of Tribal, an innovative campground-style eatery, the Mediterranean dishes of Epicure, the resort’s casual all-day restaurant, and Edge, a fine-dining restaurant only accessible by boat.
Anantara Kihavah – Best For Nature-Loving Families & Marine Wildlife

Why We Chose Anantara Kihavah
1. Minutes from Hanifaru Bay manta-ray hotspot (Jun–Nov)
2. Massive multi-room beach + overwater residences for families
3. Stargazing observatory + cooking classes + marine-rich lagoon
Another of my favourite family-friendly Maldives resorts (they say you never forget your first), Anantara Kihavah is an all-villa retreat located in the UNESCO-protected Baa Atoll (and just minutes from world-famous Hanifaru Bay, a favourite with manta rays between June and November), a 35-minute seaplane flight from the capital. Perched on the island of Kihavah Huravalhi, it’s encircled by white sand beaches and some of the most biodiverse lagoons in the archipelago, home to hawksbill turtles, reef sharks, and dolphin pods.
While the resort is home to 89 villas and residences, each featuring private infinity-edge pools, soaring timber ceilings, and open-air designs that merge indoor luxury with tropical outdoors, there are a few accommodations best suited for families.
These include the 1,330 sqm Two-Bedroom Overwater Residences, with their expansive indoor and outdoor living areas, bathrooms with sunken bathtubs and Elemis products, private pools and direct lagoon access; the 1,500 sqm Two-Bedroom Sunset Overwater Pool Residence, which caters to up to six adults (you’ll love the bathtubs with see-through panels); the 1,770 sqm Three-Bedroom Beach Pool Residence, which caters to six adults and six children (or nine adults total) with a fully equipped kitchen, lounge and dining areas, and an infinity pool with direct beach access; and the lavish 2,000 sqm Four-Bedroom Beach Pool Residence, which boasts room for up to 12 guests.
All residences feature plenty of creature comforts, from pillow and soap menus and in-villa wine cellars to 24-hour butler service.
Like all family-friendly Maldives resorts, the Anantara has a host of activities on offer. These include snorkelling the stunning house reef, rounds on the tennis court or Muay Thai ring, a climbing wall and trampoline park, an outdoor cinema, and an overwater observatory. Family adventures range from yacht charters and overnight sea adventures to dolphin safaris, cooking classes at the Spice Spoons academy, and an array of water sports, while Thiththi Boli, the resort’s kids club, available for children aged 4-12, hosts eco-crafting workshops and treasure hunts, leaving time for parents to enjoy a spot of pampering in one of the Anantara Spa’s glass-floored treatment suites.
At the end of the day, families can come together again for a meal at one of six diverse restaurants, ranging from SEA, the Maldives’ first underwater restaurant, and Fire, a vibrant teppanyaki restaurant, to Spice, home to the fiery flavours of Asia, Plates, an international buffet with live cooking stations, and Manzaru, a Mediterranean hotspot that serves poolside comfort food with a twist.
Gili Lankanfushi – Barefoot-Luxury & Eco-Minded Families

Why We Chose Gili Lankanfushi
1. Home of the world’s largest stand-alone overwater villa
2. Speedboat access from Malé — ideal for late arrivals
3. Barefoot-luxury ethos + marine biologist-led activities
A barefoot-luxury gem in the North Malé Atoll, unlike the other properties on this list, Gili Lankanfushi (originally Soneva Gili) is a quick 20-minute speedboat from Malé, making it ideal for evening arrivals that miss the seaplane curfew cutoff. A pioneer of eco-luxury in the Maldives (its mantra is “No News, No Shoes”), this serene resort spans a sparkling lagoon with powdery white sands and turquoise waters, wreathed by just 45 overwater villas that blend rustic charm with modern opulence.
For families, there are a series of suitable villas, ranging from the west-facing two-bedroom Family Villa, with its semi-open-air bathroom and two large air-conditioned living rooms, private gym, steam room and rooftop Jacuzzi; and the two-bedroom Family Villa with Pool, with its overwater sun deck, L-shaped swimming pool, and rooftop terrace; to the breathtaking 1,700 sqm Private Reserve.
The world’s largest stand-alone overwater villa features four bedrooms, an infinity pool, spa pavilion with sauna and steam room, an air-conditioned gym, a cinema and even a water slide that the kids will never want to leave. The Reserve also comes with luxury yacht transfers, 24-hour butler service, bamboo bikes for exploring, and a Bose sound system.
Of course, less time on seaplanes means more time to explore, and there’s plenty for families to do at Gili Lankanfushi, from snorkelling on the island’s reefs with the resident marine biologist to scuba diving, and surfing with the Tropicsurf team on some of the country’s best breaks (only 20 minutes away by boat). Wake up early for yoga on the beach or a tennis lesson before making for an afternoon cooking class, heading out on sunset dolphin and deep-sea fishing adventures, and catching a flick at the open-air jungle or beach cinemas.
Alternatively, meet the Maldivian locals of Bodu Huraa island, try your hand at stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking or windsurfing, or cruise the lagoon aboard the resort’s 14-metre Riviera yacht. Little ones (4-12) will love the twice-daily activities at the kids club, while older kids will be thrilled by tubing, waterskiing and wakeboarding trips.
There’s also great dining at Kashiveli, home to nightly themed culinary markets; By the Sea, a Japanese fine-dining restaurant; and Fini Foni, a casual poolside eatery with brilliant handmade ice cream.
